Analyst: iPhone 4 recall would cost $1.5 billion

iphone 4

In the wake of Consumer Reports announcing that it would not be recommending the iPhone 4 due to the much-discussed antenna problems, there have been calls for Apple to recall the device.
While a recall could be damaging to Apple's reputation, it would also be a costly endeavor, according to some calculations made by Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. In a research note on Tuesday, Sacconaghi estimated that while "a full product recall of the iPhone 4 (is) highly unlikely," it would cost Apple $1.5 billion, or 3.5 percent of its total cash on hand.
What would be more likely--and cheaper--is that Apple could issue a free rubber bumper case with each phone. That would prevent a person's hand from coming into contact with the phone's antenna, which is built into its exterior metal strip. Although Apple charges $29 at retail for the rubber cases, Bernstein estimates that giving them away to iPhone 4 customers would cost the company $1 per unit.
"It could be done immediately, would directly address the Consumer Report's concern, and would be financially immaterial," Sacconaghi wrote. "While it would force Apple to 'acknowledge' a design issue with the iPhone, we believe that consumers are increasingly aware of the antenna issue, and remedying it rather than dismissing or ignoring it appears most appropriate."
Looking to the future, the Wall Street firm says a more troubling consequence of this event than the iPhone antenna problems is Apple's response to it.
"Perhaps the bigger, longer-term concern for Apple investors is the emerging pattern of hubris that the company has displayed, which has increasingly pitted competitors (and regulators) against the company, and risks alienating customers over time," Sacconaghi wrote. "Examples of its behavior have included its limited disclosure practices (Steve Jobs' health; plans for deploying its cash balance), its attack on Adobe's Flash, its investigation into its lost iPhone prototype (which culminated in a reporter's home being searched while he was away and computers being removed), its restrictions on app development, and its ostensibly dismissive characterizations of the iPhone's antenna issues (i.e., phone needs to be held a different way; a software issue that affects the number of bars displayed). The worry is that collectively, these issues may, over time, begin to impact consumers' perceptions of Apple, undermining its enormous prevailing commercial success."
Apple has not offered a fix for the hardware issue beyond the instruction to hold the iPhone in a different manner or buy a rubber bumper case. Instead, the company says it is working on a software update that will fix the number of signal bars displayed on the phone.

iPhone 4: Apple claims signal problems are "not unique to the iPhone", offers a free case

iphone 4

Apple is giving all iPhone 4 owners a free case for their phone. Steve Jobs made the announcement as he fought back at criticism of the iPhone 4 in a bullish emergency press conference at Apple HQ today, which he opened with the words “We’re not perfect. Phones aren’t perfect... But we want to make all our users happy."
Apple called the emergency press conference to defuse the controversy over the new phone's reception issues. Holding the iPhone 4 in a certain way can cause the phone to lose signal. Rumours of a recall have been swirling, but Apple has decided to keep the antenna design as it is and instead offer cases.
Apple will offer a range of cases, including Apple's own bumper, to iphone 4 owners until 30 September. If you already have a case, Apple will offer you a refund. Here's a selection of some of our favourite cases, and oh heck, why not, here's some more. We've contacted Apple to confirm the details for UK customers.
Jobs claims that Apple has invested over $100 million in antenna testing in the last five years, and in recent testing of the bar bug "one of the first things we learned: it’s certainly not unique to the iPhone." He demonstrated a similar drop in signal on a BlackBerry Bold 9700, a Samsung Omnia 2 and an HTC Droid Eris, saying it's "It’s a challenge for the whole industry". We imagine that's news to the rest of the phone industry, which seemed to be getting by just fine.
Jobs also confirmed the white iPhone will finally arrive in the US at the end of July.
Apple launched an update for the iPhone's operating system software earlier today. iOS 4.0.1 adjusts the signal strength indicators on the phone's screen, which Apple reckons should give a more accurate depiction of the signal strength. To get the update, sync your iPhone with iTunes. Owners of older models like the 3G and 3GS should also find iOS4's performance improves with the update.
Is a free case the answer to your prayers? Is Apple back in your good books? Or is this a case of too little, too late? Comments are below. Finally, the 'death grip' has even inspired a song, as used by Apple in the conference:

You can Buy iPhone Battery Online

If you are having problems with your iPhone maintaining power or even powering on it may be time to buy iPhone battery online at an iPhone website. To buy iPhone battery online is simple. You just find an iPhone website that you like and find the proper battery for your iPhone and then buy iPhone battery on that website. If you are going to replace that iPhone battery yourself you should also consider purchasing an iPhone battery replacement kit online also.
When you decide to replace the iPhone battery yourself you will need a couple of items that may not be lurking in your tool box at home. Because the iPhone is rather small you will need some rather small screwdrivers Phillips head, flat head or both. If you have the iPhone 4 you may need an iPhone 4 5-point screwdriver which is made for the iPhone 4 if it has the Pentalobe screws that Apple has used to replace the normal Phillips head shaped screws. If you don’t know what a pentalobe screw is perhaps you really need to send in your iPhone to get the battery replaced and pay someone else for the battery and the replacement of it in your iPhone.
You can also arrange to get your iPhone repaired on the iPhone repair website. This does not have to be the Apple site but instead a third party site that specializes in the repair of iPhones. When you find an iPhone repair site you like you should bookmark it so you can easily find it again if you have to. They make it simple to buy a new iPhone battery and they will perform the repair for you too and get the phone back to you quickly. When you do this you have to remove the SIM card and make sure you include any unlocking passwords too.
If you send it back to Apple to buy a new iPhone battery you will not see your unit back for at least three business days. If your iPhone is less than a year old Apple may replace the battery so long as you didn’t damage it yourself. If you choose to send it to Apple you may be able to drop it off at your Apple retail site so they can ship it back for you. If you dropped the iPhone or sent it previously to an unauthorized repair site then Apple will not cover the repair. If you perform your own repair tasks on it Apple will not repair it under its warranty. Also if you send it to Apple make sure you back it up because it will be returned to you data free.
Another option is to take it into a local iPhone repair shop. It may be a repair shop that specializes in Apple products or a general phone repair shop. There are a lot of local small business owners that have shops where they perform repairs as needed on cell phones including the iPhone.

iPhone Can Detect Skin Cancer

The latest breakthrough in technology allows an advanced communication tool to help diagnose cancer. With the addition of a type of device called Handyscope, iPhone can now be enabled to help doctors detect skin cancer.

Besides Handyscope which is connected, the iPhone also needs to be added so that the application is functioning as dermataskop gadgets, tools commonly used in doctors to detect melanoma.

Equipment manufactured by FotFinder, a German company, uses light polarization to detect whether a mole is cancerous. This tool then take pictures and send them to the doctor for a checkup.

This tool was welcomed by cancer specialists. Cancer researcher at Salford University Dr David Pye said, the tool is very useful for people who work doing diagnosis mole.

“Sending pictures to various experts in the world for diagnosis is very helpful,” said Pye.

According to Pye, this tool can also do with a good introduction. In the examination of moles, experts usually look for the edge of an irregular and unusual color.

“It could very well recognize it,” he said.

However, Pye also said that the tool is not a tool for making a diagnosis in the home. The tool doctors use to look for another opinion.

According to marketing manager Valeska Heinrich, this tool makes inspection easier to skin because it can carry. “The picture on the screen displays detail so the decision can be taken quickly,” he added.
